My husband and I "went out" three times before were actually dating. If a girl seems really into you then ask her to go steady. If she says she doesn't want to date then ask if you can still "go out". Maybe further on down the line she will change her mind. I never asked my ex to be my girlfriend, it was just understood after the first night out. Temporary is correct though: With most girls, I would take her out a few times and then ask to go steady.
